Abstract [en]

Background: The health care in Sweden have an issue with long waiting time, limited resources and high workload. The emergency care is not an exception too these. Nurses working in emergency departments face unpredictable acute situations and therefore have to be able to make quick decisions and to prioritize the patients' different needs. Due to the nature of this special working environment, it can lead to work-related stress.

Aim: The aim of this study was to illustrate how work-related stress could affect the nurse's care at an emergency department.

Method: A literature review from a nursing perspective based on ten qualitative research studies. The five-step model was used as the articles were analyzed which resulted in two main themes.

Results: The themes were The time for caring was not enough and Lack of quality care. Which illustrate the impact of work-related stress on nurses' care. The two main themes had five significant subthemes. Work-related stress resulted in suffering patients and nurses with reduced motivations.

Conclusion: There were several factors that contributed to work-related stress: workload, lack of time, structure of the organization, work environment and lack of communication. This study showed that work-related stress was a hindrance in nursing care and it was difficult to promote health and prevent suffering.
