Everything is not as it seems to be : Children's descriptions of their everyday life based on economic vulnerability (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The background to the study is that the Convention of Children´s Rights will become a law in Sweden and all decisions concerning children should take into account the best interests of the child. In order to do this, the children's perspective needs to be highlighted. The study is based on children in economic vulnerability where the family receives financial assistance. The purpose of the study is to understand the children who live in economic vulnerability and which strategies the children use to manage their position in different social contexts. I have completed a qualitative study in which I used semi-structured interviews with children whose families receive financial assistance in my empirical collection. The study is part of the research project "Children and young people in economic vulnerability in the municipality of Västervik". With the help of the concepts of children's agency and participation and Social Relational Theory as a theoretical starting point, the study's empirical data together with previous research has grown to a result. The result of the study shows that there is a tension field between the children who are aware of their financial situation and take active responsibility and the children who are not at all involved in the family's finances nor have any desire to be. Those children believe that the responsibility lies with their parents and they also did not feel that the family had strained finances. The study is permeated by a view of children as competent actors, which also turned out to be among the children who were aware of the family's situation. They create different strategies for managing and adapting to their everyday life, which is referred to as the children's agency. In what way they use their agency is influenced by internal, cultural and relational resources.
