Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to describe and examine how the Sweden Democrats construct Islam and if there are any Islamophobic elements in their ideology. We have chosen to examine the Sweden Democrats from the period before the election in 2009, when they entered the Swedish parliament in 2010 up until 2017. The Sweden democrats have developed the way the party construct Islam in their rhetoric from the period before the party got elected and the period after. We found it interesting to further look at the period when the party explicitly criticized Islam and when it became implicit. In this way we shed a light on how the Sweden Democrats might have used the creation of fear of Islam in order to gain voters. However, the problem in our question is although to see how they construct Islam and if there are any Islamophobic elements in their ideology. Based on the ontology of social constructivism and theories connected to Islamophobia, a qualitative analysis will be conducted to describe the Islamophobic elements that might exist within the party. We will present a further explanation of the concepts in the theory chapter and will also be used in the conduction of an analysis of the party's ideology. The three main areas of interests which are religious, cultural and political differences will be connected to the definitions of Islamophobia and will be analyzed separately. By doing so, it became clear that the party developed their way of expressing concerns of immigration and assimilation of Muslims in Sweden. Our results show that the Sweden Democrats are not Islamophobic regarding all our main areas. Rather, the party has only shown clear Islamophobic elements in the area of cultural differences and problems that occurs with immigration of Muslims during the time before the election. These types of messages are hard to find within the party today.
