Abstract [en]
Background: Endometriosis is a common disease which affects every tenth woman. The disease affects women's quality of life with pain and other unpleasant symptoms. There is a lack of knowledge about the disease and a correct diagnosis may take several years to receive.
Aim: The aim of this study was to highlight women's experiences of living with endometriosis.
Method: A literature-based study based on an analysis of eight scientific articles of qualitative research.
Results: Two main themes emerged the influence on everyday life and the contact with healthcare. The results showed that endometriosis limits women's lives in several aspects. Pain was the most described symptom affecting everyday life and being mistrusted by the healthcare was often described when in contact with the healthcare. The lack of knowledge of the disease is highlighted in the articles.
Conclusion: To prevent a delayed diagnosis the caregivers need a deeper knowledge and understanding of endometriosis. It is important to understand how it affects women's life and to prevent normalizing and neglecting women's symptoms.
