Abstract [sv]

Ungdomen är en fas i livet där utveckling, lärande och hälsa har en stor inverkan på hur livet senare utformas. Det finns en aktuell samhällsdebatt om att den psykiska ohälsan bland ungdomar i Sverige har ökat under senare år, detta ställer höga krav på den sociala sektorn om hur behoven möts och hanteras. Skolan är en naturlig arena för ungdomar då skolplikt implementerats i skollagen och är därav tvingande i grundskolan. Aktörer som arbetar inom skolverksamheten har därför möjlighet att skapa goda förutsättningar för goda framtidsutsikter.

Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka skolkuratorers yrkesroll ur ett hälsofrämjande perspektiv gällande psykisk ohälsa inom grundskolans verksamhet. Ambitionen var att komma fram till en resultatdel, där författarna kunde öka kunskapen om hur professionen kan och bör användas i arbetet med psykisk ohälsa bland elever.

Studien utgår från kvalitativ metod där fyra semistrukturerade intervjuer med skolkuratorer genomförts inom fyra olika kommuner med geografisk distans och olika storlek. Resultatet analyserades med hjälp av Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), vilket innebär att skolkuratorers perspektiv, egna tankar och värderingar har lyfts fram.

Resultatet visade att skolkuratorerna upplevde både möjligheter och begränsningar i sitt arbete med psykisk ohälsa. Det var dock svårt att urskilja professionens specifika yrkesroll inom skolans verksamhet, då uppfattningen om det kurativa arbetet varierade. Det framkom att det fanns en bristande insikt i hur professionens kompentens kan vara användbar då deras yrkesroll är vagt formulerad. Resultatet av denna studie förtydligar skolkuratorers arbete och bidrar med kunskap om hur deras kompentens kan och lämpligast bör användas i arbetet med psykisk ohälsa.

Abstract [en]

The youth is a phase in life where development, learning and health have a big impact on how life is later formed. There is a current debate in society about the fact that mental illness among young people in Sweden has increased in recent years, this places high demands on the social sector on how needs are met and managed. The school is a natural arena for young people because of the implemented education act and is therefore imperative in compulsory school. Actors who work in the school operations therefore have the opportunity to create good conditions for good prospects.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of school counselors in a health-promoting perspective regarding mental illness within the school´s activities. The ambition was to arrive at a result section, where the authors could increase the knowledge of how the profession can and should be used in the work with mental ill-health among students.

The study is based on a qualitative method where four semi-structured interviews with school counselors were conducted in four different municipalities with geographical distance and different sizes. The result has been analyzed with the help of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which means that the perspective of school counselors, their own thoughts and values will be highlighted.

The result showed that school counselors experienced both opportunities and limitations in their work with mental illness. However, it was difficult to discern the profession´s specific professional role in the school´s activities, since the perception of curative work was ambiguous. It emerged that there was a lack of knowledge into how the profession´s competences can be useful as their professional role is vaguely formulated. The result of this study clarifies the work of school counselors and contributes with knowledge about how their competencies can and should be used most appropriately in the work of mental illness.
