Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to achieve an increased understanding of the school counselors' experiences of practical and theoretical knowledge in conversations with students.

To answer the purpose, the following questions have been used: What experience does the school counselors have of theoretical and practical knowledge in conversations with students? Do the school counselors experience that any other form of knowledge emerges, than the theoretical and practical knowledge, in conversations with students? The study is based on a qualitative method and is inspired by a phenomenological research approach. In other words, we have not investigated the phenomenon, but the school counselors experiences of the phenomenon. The data collection method used for the study is semi-structured interviews. The material has been analyzed using a phenomenological analysis method.

The result of the study shows that school counselors experience both practical and theoretical knowledge as significant in conversations with students. The school counselors' experiences of what the forms of knowledge mean and how they are used in conversations with students differ, but the common denominator of their experiences is that one cannot exclude the other. During the work on the study, another form of knowledge emerged that was considered for the school counselors as at least as important as the practical and theoretical knowledge. This knowledge is referred to as interpersonal knowledge, of which the school counselors' experiences of this form of knowledge are also separated here. Interpersonal knowledge is described both as a personality-based knowledge and as a tacit knowledge. The school counselors also experienced that an empathic approach and their intuition affects the conversation with the students.

Abstract [sv]

Denna studie syftar till att nå en ökad förståelse för skolkuratorers upplevelser av praktiska och teoretiska kunskaper i samtal med elever.

För att besvara syftet har följande frågeställningar använts: Vilken upplevelse har skolkuratorerna av teoretisk och praktisk kunskap i samtal med elever? Upplever skolkuratorerna att någon annan kunskapsform framträder, än den teoretiska och praktiska kunskapen, i samtal med elever? Studien vilar på en kvalitativ metod och är inspirerad av en fenomenologisk forskningsansats. Vi har med andra ord inte undersökt fenomenet, utan skolkuratorernas upplevelser av fenomenet. Den datainsamlingsmetod som använts för studien är halvstrukturerade intervjuer. Materialet har analyserats med hjälp av en fenomenologisk analysmetod.

Resultatet av studien visar att skolkuratorerna upplever både den praktiska och teoretiska kunskapen som betydande i samtal med elever. Skolkuratorernas upplevelser av vad kunskapsformerna innebär och hur dessa används i samtal med elever skiljer sig åt, men den gemensamma nämnaren av deras upplevelser är att det ena inte kan utesluta det andra. Under arbetet framkom en annan form av kunskap som ansågs för skolkuratorerna som minst lika viktig som den praktiska och teoretiska kunskapen. Denna kunskap benämns som mellanmänsklig kunskap varav skolkuratorernas upplevelser kring denna kunskapsform även här skiljs åt. Mellanmänsklig kunskap beskrivs både som en personlighetsbunden kunskap och som en tyst kunskap. Skolkuratorerna upplevde även att ett empatiskt förhållningssätt och att deras intuition påverkar samtalet med eleverna.
