Sleep profile and yoga : A randomized controlled study from Swedish Correctional Institutions. (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Positive effects of yoga practising on mental health and wellbeing have been shown previously in samples from general, clinical and even inmate populations. However, no studies have investigated the effect of yoga exercise on sleep quality. The present study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial, in several Swedish prisons with the aim to study the effects of 10 weeks yoga on prison inmates' sleep profile.

Method: The study population included 152 inmates, evenly distributed between yoga and control groups. Those in the yoga groups participated for 10 weeks, once a week in a 90 minutes yoga class, while control group participants were asked to practice free choice of exercise (but not yoga) during the study period. Participants reported their own sleep quality with the help of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality instrument before and after the 10 weeks long interventions. The study confirmed previous finding about that inmates rate their overall sleep quality as "pretty bad". However, they also rated their sleep hours to be at least seven hours a night which is an acceptable sleep time for an adult. Physical activity (including yoga) significantly shortened the time required to fall asleep and improved sleep quality.

Results: Yoga specifically, also resulted in significantly improved time in bed, and decreased sleep disturbances. Sleep disturbances significantly decreased in those who exercised yoga compared to those who participated in other physical activities.

Conclusion: The study concludes that physical activity improves inmates' sleep profile while yoga specifically helps with sleep disturbances.
