Abstract [en]

This thesis analyses how the level of politicization and professionalism of the Museum of Ethnography, the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities, the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities and the Museums of World Cultures has changed since 1969. It does so by applying theory of politicization, meritocracy and professionalism. The research questions asked are (1) has there been a change in the level of politicized recruitment and type of meritocratic recruitment of director generals to museums? (2) has there been a change in the level of politicized instructions in the steering documents of museums? The thesis is a comparative single-case study that uses both a quantitative analysis and a qualitative analysis. The thesis shows that the recruitment of director generals has not been politicized, and that organizational professionalism has become more common. The only politicized instructions found were in letters of appropriation from 2003 to 2008 as well as in 2012 and 2016.
