District nurse´s experiences of working with overweight and obesity (English)
Abstract [en]

Overweight and obesity is a still growing problem for public health. A change in lifestyle through change of diet and increased physical activity is fundamental in treatment for permanent weight loss. The district nurse has a central role in health promotion and the work involves using methods to support and motivate these patients.

The aim of the study was to illustrate the district nurse´s experiences in the course of action in the treatment of patients suffering from overweight or obesity.

Eight district nurses and nurses working in primary health care were interviewed. The data was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach.

In the analysis of the data material, the theme that emerged was to emanate from the person. Four categories emerged; Get to know the patient, educating and advising the patient, individualized methods and also impeding and helping factors for success, with eleven subcategories.

The district nurse has a central and significant role in the work with patients who are overweight or obese. The work consists of continuous contact with the patients, knowledge communication and methods for lifestyle changes. The central part, however, is to emanate from the person and to adjust the work according to the patient´s level of motivation. The involvement of the patient's relatives is seen as a prerequisite for the patient to succeed. The work is considered time consuming and knowledge-intensive but at the same time exciting and challenging.
