Aging from the perspective of the elderly (English)
Abstract [en]
Background: Being older means increased vulnerability to age-related illness and is also linked to changes both socially and psychologically. The district nurse´s task is to look at the complexity of aging and to promote health for good aging. Aim: The purpose of the study was to investigate older people's experience of their own aging. Method: The study has a qualitative design with an inductive approach. Data has been collected by interviews of elderly people, 70 years or more. Totally 9 elderly people did participate. The interviews were analysed by the method of qualitative content analysis. Results: The maintaining in the analysis resulted in four categories and nine subcategories; `To live here and now`, with the subcategories `age is just a number` and `joy of life`; `To get the reward after the effort` with the subcategories `More time` and `Nice with life experience`; `The desire to be independent` with the subcategories `The will to be strong` and `The will to take care of yourself`; `To be reminded of aging` with the subcategories `The body`s change`, `Losses` and `Heaven around the corner`. Conclusion: Aging can be as exciting as being young and the aging is mostly positive. If the district nurse can see the elderly as an individual with an own personality and not only as old it’s a good start for preventing good aging. When the elderly gets reminded of their age, the nurse should pay attention to that and support them in finding new ways in life.
