Organisational changes effect on culture in family firms (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Family companies constitute a majority of all organizations in the labour market. Although family business research has addressed what makes these companies unique, such as succession, there is still insufficient understanding of family business organizational cultures and how they are affected by organizational changes. The purpose of the study was thus to investigate the organizational culture of family companies that had undergone an organizational change. This was done by investigating how the organizational culture is affected by the change. The study has its foundation in the dynamics that exist between the systems found in the family business. The method used was a comparative case study of two family companies, both of which have undergone extensive organizational changes. In both companies, empirics have been obtained through deep interviews with members of the family that own and manage the family businesses, as well as through observations of the organizations' facilities. By applying Schein´s culture model, the two organizations cultures and how these were influenced by the changes that the companies had undergone were analysed. The result of the study showed that in the interaction between family and business, family had the greatest impact on culture, and this was shown by what is described as a family spirit. This spirit was identified to originate from the values the founder introduced into the organization and which eventually developed into basic assumptions. We also found that organizational changes led to a cementing and a strengthening of the organizational culture.
