Abstract [en]

This thesis consists of a theoretical study constructed upon the three great Ancient Greek theorists: Aristotle, Plato and Thucydides looking at decline of democracy. Aspects of this study, include imperialism and war, with a focus on the Peloponnesian War. This theoretical study will then be applied to the single-N case study of France during the Algerian War 1954- 1962, through the use of parliamentary debates. In order to do this a textual analysis shall be undertaken of the debates. The analysis will explore through the paradigm of the theoretical study the effects of the war on French democracy during the aforementioned period, assisting in developing a deeper understanding of the processes behind democratic decline. The results of this affirm that war negatively impacted the state of democracy in the chosen single-N case study. Further studies such as comparative ones could strengthen the results found in this study.
