Sense of coherence in inmates working with farm animals (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background. In the United States and other countrys, farm animals are used for rehabilitation purposes in different prison-based programs. In Swedish prisons, farm animals are only used as an occupation for the inmates, without any therapeutic or rehabilitation purposes. Aim The aim of the study was to examine if there was a change in the inmates sence of coherence during the institution´s stay and to study the effect of the work with farm animals on the inmates’ sence of coherence. Method The method used in the study was of quantitative approach with an quasi-experimental design. At the start and at the end of a 6-12 weeks-period in three selected low security prisons in Sweden, 81 male inmates` sence of coherence was measured by a self-rated instrument that assesses aspects of comprehensibility, manageability, meaningfulness. Results The result of this study showed an general increase of sense of coherence on the inmates during the institution´s stay. The farm animal group had an positive increase in the subscale comprehensibility and in the KASAM total scale. Between group analyses shown no significant differences. The proportion of inmates with increased KASAM was dubble as many in the group who worked with farm animals, compared to those not working with farm animals. Conclusion Occupation of inmates increases their sence of coherence, while work with farm animals as occupation has a specific and stronger effect on inmates’ sence of coherence than other occupation possibilities within the prison environment.
