The big difference : – how self-care changes for a person living with diabetes type 1 by Flash Glucose Monitoring (English)
Abstract [en]
Background For a person who lives with diabetes, it is necessary to have good glycemic control to prevent complications related to diabetes. Despite a disease, health can be experienced. Self-care demands knowledge about one´s own needs and how to do to meet them. It is a big challenge to live with diabetes with a constant work to balance eating, exercise and glycemic control. Aim The aim with this study was to illuminate changes in self-care due to the use of Flash Glucose Monitoring based on experiences of living with diabetes. Method Eleven persons were interviewed, and the results were analyzed with a qualitative content analysis. The selection was persons with diabetes type 1, age over 18 years old and have been using Flash Glucose Monitoring more than one year and before that have been using capillary sampling. Results Four categories appeared which each had three subcategories. The four categories are Diabetes is incorporated into daily life, To never be free, New possibilities to fine-tune the treatment and Big improvements despite new drawbacks. It resulted in the theme A new world has been opened which makes it easier to know where you are heading. Conclusion To start using Flash Glucose Monitoring can facilitate the work and provide a new access to the glucose value through the simplicity of measure it and through the trend arrow that indicates the direction of glucose, which affects self-esteem.
