The importance of an non-profit engagement : A qualitative study on motivation and leadership in nonprofit organizations in the sparsely populated area (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Non-profit engagement has a strong foothold in Sweden and has a major impact on society's stability. Engaging non-profit is not always easy because no pay is paid, and other motivational factors are needed.

The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of what motivates non-profit engagement and what characterizes and motivates a non-profit leader in the rural area.

Data collection was done through six deep interviews and respondents gave a self-appreciated picture of how their engagement is, what motivates them and about leadership in non-profit contexts.

The conclusion in the study was that there are several motivational factors but some that are primary. Meaningful, solidarity and sense of responsibility are the main motivational factors for an non-profit engagement, but encouragement also gave a motivating effect. What the study also revealed was that a leader should guide the members by knowledge, fairness, inclusive and responsive, but also that the leader is at the same hierarchical level as all members of the organization. Motivation for a leader was to be surrounded with individuals who had the same ambition and motivation level that create more engagement.
