School nurse's knowledge regarding genital mutilation among girls (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: There are more than two hundred million girls and women around the world who have been exposed to genital mutilation for traditional, cultural, social or religious reasons. All types of genital mutilation are forbidden in Sweden. School nurses meet girls who have been subject to female genital mutilation. School nurses have an opportunity to help the girls based on their knowledge. The knowledge is available but it is not enough because those who work as school nurses are predominantly trained district nurses and in the education of the district nurse there is no relevant genital mutilation.

Aim: The aim of this study was to map if school nurses have received information or education regarding gender mutilation.

Method: A quantitative and qualitative questionnaire study with 54 school nurses from both municipal and private schools.

Results: The study shows that school nurses desired more information and education regarding genital mutilation and more cooperation with other professional.

Discussion: This study focuses on the school nurse's knowledge of girls who have been subject to genital mutilation. The study shows the school nurse´s desire more information and education, regular updates and willingness to have the opportunity to collaborate with other professions about genital mutilation.

Conclusion: The school nurse plays an important role when it comes to gender mutilation among girls. It is important that the school nurses are aware of genital mutilation and it´s health-related problems. Education, routines and guidelines is needed for the school nurses to be more aware of any health-related problems regarding genital mutilation.
