Abstract [en]
This thesis analyzes the contexts in which Muslims are mentioned in the conservative newspaper Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) and socialist newspaper Dagens ETC. This research contributes to the field of Swedish media representation of Muslims by analyzing in what context Muslims are mentioned in two different newspapers with different ideologies due to presentation of Muslim related news. The thesis uses an analytical framework based on war/terror-context, far right/populist right context, fundamentalist religious-context, non-fundamentalist religious context, social and cultural problem-context, social and cultural possibility-context. The reason we have chosen the year of 2015 is because there has been many events in news reporting which can be linked to Muslims such as: the growth of ISIS, The refugee crisis and Paris bombings, the Burma crisis and the recruit of European Muslims to terrorist groups to name a few. The analysis is performed through combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative methods that are used in the analysis are based on the occurrence of the word 'Muslim' in each article, and from there in which context the word is mentioned. The results show that Muslims were more represented fundamentalist, far right/populist and war/terror contexts in the articles from SvD compared to the articles from Dagens ETC. This research tends to contribute a small contribution to the field of the representation of Muslims in Swedish media by analyzing the contextual positioning of Muslims in Swedish media news articles. We acknowledge that this research does not provide with an exclusive and general depiction of media representation of Muslims in Sweden however the research contributes with a part of the Swedish media representation of Muslims.
