A part of me : A litterature study of young people´s experiences of surviving childhood cancer (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Every year, 300 children in Sweden suffer from childhood cancer. The chance to survive has increased, and today, four out of five children will survive. Childhood cancer and its treatment cause medical consequences that can appear immediately or later in life. Suffered from childhood cancer means a change in everyday life, both emotionally, and physically.

Aim: The aim of this litteratur study was to describe young people´s experiences of surviving childhood cancer.

Method: A litterature review was carried out. Data from ten qualitative articles were analysed using the method to contributing to evidence-based nursing with a ground in analysis of qualitative research. This method was used to get a better understanding of young people´s experiences of surviving childhood cancer.

Results: Young survivors of childhood cancer experienced an altered body, which made them feel different and challenged their relationships with others. Furthermore, they also faced difficulties in everyday life as a result from the altered body, as to perform in school, and in daily activities. The experiences of childhood cancer, and treatments changed the young person's life by influencing their views and made them value family and health more.

Conclusion: The findings in this study shows that childhood cancer and its treatment can result in consequences that effects the experience of health in both negative and positive direction. Survivors also benefit from further support and information from health care system after the concluded treatment period.
