Background: Forensic psychiatric care is a special area where patients that are given care, are condemned by the judge to get psychiatric care. Patients that are condemned to forensic psychiatric care have often performed criminal acts under a serious mental disturbance. There are different types of mental illness within patients that are condemned at forensic psychiatric care, which makes it harder to be a good care giver with professional approach for health care personnel. It is also important that the care staff are aware of treating the patient as any individuals and not as criminals. Aim: The aim with this study was to describe caregivers’ experience of taking care of patients in forensic psychiatric care. Method: A qualitative literature study was conducted. Results: The results gave a total of seven themes, these are: “To accomplish a constant struggle”, “To activate”, “That gender plays a part”, “To feel fear and powerlessness”, “To show respect”, “To need support” and “To show dissatisfaction”. Conclusion: Caregivers that work with patients in forensic psychiatric care expresses that they have a lack of knowledge about how to handle specific situations and their perceived feelings. The caregivers tend to feel powerlessness when they know that they cannot reach the attendance.
