Can flextime and telework reduce the conflict between work life and personal life? (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Today, flexible ways of working such as flextime and telework are a common occurrence, which could result in a conflict between work life and private life. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate whether there was a relation between the attitude to flextime and telework as well as in what way an individual experiences a conflict between work life and personal life and finally, if flextime and telework affects the extent an individual experiences a conflict between work life and private life. This study had a quantitative approach and consisted of a survey with questions regarding flextime, telework and the conflict between work life and private life. The respondents of the study consisted of 92 administrative officials working at a municipality (67% women och 33% men), (year of birth, M = 1970, SD = 11,05). Every respondent was bound by the same flextime contract and none of them had a leading position. To interpret the results, previous research was used as well as result analyses, specifically Pearson correlations and t-tests. The results indicated that the majority of the respondents considered flextime and telework positively. The results also showed that those that had a positive attitude to telework also experienced the conflict between work life and private life to higher level. Furthermore, the more positive an individual is towards flextime the more positive is an individual towards telework. In the free-text answers it was possible to find answers from the respondents that showed some of the negative aspects of flextime and telework.
