Nurses' experiences of caring for people with mental health problems in primary care (English)
Abstract [en]

Mental ill-health is a growing problem, and 43.6% of all sickness is due to mental ill-health. Primary care load is large in terms of this patient population. Previous research focuses on patients' experiences of being cared for by a psychiatric nurse in primary care. The patients describe positive experience of this contact. These experiences are about a greater understanding of their ill-health, greater involvement of related parties, and greater confidence in the nurses. According to this the authors find it as interesting to illuminate nurses experiences of caring for persons with mental ill-health within primary health care. This study was based on eight semi-structured interviews that were subjected to qualitative content analysis. The results showed that nurses were trying to nurture both body and soul, they also provide support and follow up and personalized patient-centered care. The nurse tried to involve relatives and create a nurturing environment however, the nurses also experienced difficulties, such as, lack of knowledge about mental ill-health and difficulties in cooperation with specialist psychiatric services. They also experienced a growing lack of mental health which lead to less time for each patient. In conclusion, there are areas for improvement at both organizational and individual levels. The lack of knowledge as a general nurse in primary care is something that psychiatric nurse possesses. It also directed criticism towards the basic education inadequate content of psychiatry.
