Immigration discourse change in the Swedish media? : A descriptive study of cosmopolitan and communitarian representations of immigration in the Swedish editorials during the refugee crisis 2015-2016 (English)
Abstract [en]

The following BachelorĀ“s thesis is a descriptive study of the immigration discourse during the refugee crisis in 2015-2016 in the Swedish media, focusing on the editorials, and analyzing the representation of immigration before and after the Swedish government implemented a more restrictive immigration policy using the representation theory, discourse theory and the concepts of cosmopolitanism and communitarianism. More specifically the thesis analyzes, (1) How are the cosmopolitan representations characterized in the editorials in terms of norms, problems, solutions and the effects of the solutions in time frame 1 and time frame 2? (2) How are the communitarian representations characterized in the editorials in terms of norms, problems, solutions and the effects of the solutions in time frame 1 and time frame 2 (3) Has the political discourse on immigration in the editorials changed between the two time periods and what similarities and differences are there? The approach we used is a qualitative one, analyzing editorials from the five biggest newspapers in Sweden, which we found using "mediearkivet". The results that we found was that the cosmopolitan representation were the same, with focus on human rights and suggestions of generous immigrations policies, in both time periods. The communitarian representations in the first time period were mostly concerned with problems of immigration and suggestions of limiting it by implementing ID- and Border controls, while the second time frame was characterized by more discussions about national culture and values. A change in the representations could be seen between the two time periods, from a mix between cosmopolitanism and communitarianism in the first to a clear communitarian discourse in the second one.
