Abstract [en]
This thesis aims to describe and compare the media's representation of feminism and feminists in four Swedish newspapers – Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. The years of 1999 and 2014 is the basis of my research, enabling me to see if there has been any change over time in Swedish media representations of feminism and feminists. These two years are selected due to being the years when the book Fittstim and the TV-series Fittstim – Min kamp were released, which both stirred up a debate about feminism in media. Based upon social constructivist ontology and media representation theories, a combined qualitative and quantitative analysis will be conducted in order to be able to describe and compare how feminism and feminists have been represented – or "framed" – in media. The analysis will be based upon two frames: "demonization" and "trivialization and personalization." Within each frame, a comparison between stereotypes and attitudes in 1999 and 2014 will be made. The analysis will show that feminism and feminists are still exposed to trivialization and personalization when represented by the media. In the demonization frame, one can see a change from 1999 when feminism still was seen as partly abnormal, to 2014 when feminism is seen more as the norm.
