Patients' experiences of having gone through a structured patient education during their inpatient stay for depression (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Outpatient patients had long been offered information events both in groups and individually. There was a willingness to offer psychoeducation to hospitalized patients. In 2007 workgroups started to work on the material for what today is called psychiatry school. There are three specializations depression, anxiety and substance abuse. Aim: To describe how patients with depression who underwent a structured patient education are experiencing the benefits of having participated in training. Method: The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with seven participants who participated in psychoeducation about depression. The interviews were analyzed with a content analysis, we condensed, coded and categorized the meaning units that emerged from the material. Results: Two categories emerged. These were positive experiences and negative experiences. The positives were: Great material and lecturer, experience and strategies, and meet others. The negatives were: feeling forced, dissatisfaction and a lack of follow-up. The conclusion is that it is a positive thing to be able to offer a structured patient education in inpatient care.
