”I feel six feet taller” : a qualitative study about transition in working life (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The current labor market is affected by cyclical fluctuations. As a consequence people more often change careers or end up in unemployment. The purpose of this study was to investigate how people who were unemployed experienced this transition and if their personal experiences could relate to current theories such as Self-efficacy and SOC (sense of coherence). This transition refers to individuals with a terminated employment ending up in unemployment. Furthermore, the purpose was to investigate if there were any differences in how individuals coped with the transition depending on if they were fired or voluntarily resigned. Qualitative method was used and semi structured interviews were conducted with four informants. When analyzing the data, thematic analysis method was used. Results showed that the informants’ experience of the transition differed depending on if they had been fired or voluntarily resigned. One difference that emerged from the results was that the informants who voluntarily resigned experienced the transition as an opportunity for change; they also had a greater sense of control in their situation. To conclude, the informants’ own choice affected well-being
