Abstract [en]

This study examined how pedagogical agents can be used to improve the guidance of students that need scenario-based learning in virtual reality (VR). VR has become more and more common within educational spaces. Guidance in a virtual environment (VE) via digital guides opens new opportunities for learning. This study utilized semi-structured interviews for data gathering. The results of the artefact development and the interviews indicate that while pedagogical agents in VR can assist with learning, the way they are designed and implemented is important for a proper guide. This study presents four nascent design principles to act as guidelines for designing and implementing pedagogical agents in educational VEs. The design principles are Utilize the Six Degrees of Freedom, Demonstrate available choices to the user, Opportunities for learning dangerous tasks and Familiarity in the Virtual Environment.
