Detained persons stay in closed environments and the impact on mental health : A literature-based study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In Sweden, one can be deprived of liberty in either prison or forensic psychiatric care units. Persons deprived of their liberty are at greater risk of mental illness than the general population.

Aim: To shed light on convicted persons' experiences of how their stay in closed environments such as prisons and forensic psychiatric care units affects their mental health.

Method: A literature-based study has been conducted. Ten scientific articles were obtained from the databases Cinahl and PsycINFO through systematic searches and were then analyzed based on a five-step model.

Results: Both positive and negative experiences were emphasized, however, the negative experiences constituted a majority. Three categories and eight subcategories emerged. The three categories were: Dejection, Power abuse and vulnerability, and Improved mental health.

Conclusions: The psychosocial environment outweighed the physical environment in terms of its impact on the mental health of detainees.
