Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to see how the language in three songs constructs and represents women and men as two unequally positioned genders in society. The focus is on the revelations of women’s status, social and ideological processes, which women were subjected to, or they as agents participate in. For the present study, three different popular songs were analyzed by looking into different aspects of gender issues. The linguistic concepts semantic fields and semantic roles were applied to illustrate how women and men are portrayed differently, as well as to show how men and women’s social position differ. The findings show that songs are a source that represent and discuss different issues of gender,additionally, that women commonly are victimized, objectified and portrayed as powerless. The results also highlight how popular music reflects and reveals women’s social status and processes they go through (either positive or negative) in modern time
