Abstract [en]

How come households in Sweden have such a high debt to income level? Almost everyone in the Swedish society has some kind of debt, and usually the debt is mainly a mortgage. The purpose of this degree work is to find how different factors influence the indebtedness. To contribute to earlier research, we would like to add a new variable, Economic policy uncertainty. It is a relatively new way of trying to predict economic behavior and is used to analyze how fiscal and financial policies affect people's way of investing and spend their money. Other control variables we have used in the thesis are, repo rate, property price index, unemployment rate, and percentage of people between the age of 20-40 years. To answer our question of issue we used methods as Error correction model and Ordinary least square model. We used quarterly data between the years of 2000-2019. Our hypothesis and expectations were not confirmed according to the result from the OLS-test. All of our variables besides EPU showed significance. This indicates that we need to reject our hypothesis.
