Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the current study was to investigate how professionals at SiS view isolation and its psychological effects on children and young people. At the same time, also, get an insight into how they see the Children's Convention on 1 January 2020 becoming Swedish law. Since reporting in the media regarding isolation of children and young people only gives one perspective on this measure in Swedish institutional care, it is important to bring forth a different perspective. There are numerous publications and reports from SiS, but there is no specific one that highlights the views and knowledge of professionals about what it means to isolate a child or youth. The theoretical part of the study is based on scientific articles, reports, behavioristic and humanistic perspectives, but also the method "low arousal approach ".

The empirical material was collected via postal surveys and included both quantitative and qualitative methods. As the number of participants was lower than expected, the results of the quantitative questions were compiled as descriptive statistics, while the results of the qualitative questions were analysed based on thematic analysis.

The current study shows that most professionals have good knowledge of what isolation of children and young people entails, while working to find alternatives for this measure. The study also shows a reduction in the number of isolations and hints that this type of measure on its way out.
