A comparative study of convergence time between OSPF and EIGRP in small and large topologies (English)
Abstract [en]

Minimal downtime of the network is important for most of today's enterprise networks. Preferable it shouldn't be noticeable at all, considering all real-time applications used. It is therefore important for the routing protocol to be able to reconvergence fast. In this study OSPF will be compared to EIGRP's convergence time, in both small and large topologies, when a router on the primary path fails.

The tests were performed in topologies with 8, 18, 34 and 68 physical Cisco routers and L3 switches each with three different scenarios, OSPF, EIGRP without a pre-calculated backup path and EIGRP with a backup route.

The result shows that EIGRP outperforms OSPF with several seconds in all topologies.

Minimala driftavbrott för nätverket är idag viktigt för de flesta företag. Helst ska det inte märkas alls om något går sönder, med tanke på alla realtidsapplikationer som används. Det är därför viktigt att routingprotokollet har snabb omkonvergeringstid. I den här studien jämförs OSPF och EIGRP konvergeringstid, i såväl små som stora topologier, när en rou-ter på den primära vägen går ned.

Testerna utfördes i topologier med 8, 18, 34 och 68 fy-siska Cisco-routrar och L3-switchar var och en med tre olika scenarion, OSPF, EIGRP utan en förkalkylerad backup route och EIGRP med en backup route.

Resultatet visar att EIGRP är flera sekunder snabbare än OSPF i samtliga topologier.
