Rape in Hollywood combat films’: : Has the representation of the cause of wartime rape changed in Hollywood combat films from pre-1980s to post-1980s? (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to analyse and describe how the representation of the cause of rape in Hollywood combat movies has changed from the pre-1980's to the post-1980's. By doing this, we will contribute to a deeper understanding of how the perception of rape in society has changed, since the second wave of feminism, which has not been addressed before in studies of rape and media representation of rape. We will provide a description of how the cause of rape is represented in movies using evolutionary theory and social constructionist theory on rape, and compare movies from the pre-1980's and the post-1980's, which is the ending period of feminism's second wave. Film theory is also used in order to show that cinema reflects ideas and norms in society. This study uses a qualitative single case study to describe what causes rape according to Hollywood combat movies. By analysing Hollywood combat movies containing rape and sexual violence from the pre-1980's and the post-1980's, the study shows that the representation of the cause of rape has changed from evolutionary to social constructionist aspects of rape, which reflects how society's perception of the cause of rape has changed.
