Rehabilitation with the support of animals in mental illness : An empirical study from a professional perspective (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Mental illness is a complex concept which comprises conditions from mild mental issues to serious mental illness and disabilities. During the recent time, the amount of mental illness has increased and rehabilitation efforts supported by animals have surfaced, one being Green rehabilitation. Research based on the perspective of clients indicate that animals and the nature can positively affect individuals with mental illness.Aim: The aim of the study was to highlight the staff's experiences of rehabilitation with the support of animals, directed at individuals living with mental illness. Method: The study was conducted empirically with a qualitative approach. The collection of data was performed thru five interviews with staff active in Green rehabilitation establishments supported by animals. The material was analysed using Graneheim and Lundmans qualitative content analysis. Result: The result of the study showed that the staff experiences a positive effect from efforts supported by animals and it being stimulating for the participant's mental health. During interviews, the staff repeatedly brought up that the animals helps to open the opportunity for natural and non-demanding meetings, which is why "The undemanding meeting" is the theme of the study. The sub-themes developed during the study was positive relations and spontaneous conversations. The undemanding meeting can contribute to more natural conversations and revealing the underlying problem can happen more naturally. Since the work with animals help to flatten the imbalance of power and help to carry natural conversations, this can lead to a better mental health.
