Abstract [en]

This bachelor's thesis aims to analyse and compare how men and women are represented in Swedish male and female magazines, mainly fashion and lifestyle magazines. This thesis specifically studies how media represent men and women in Swedish magazines in relation to stereotypical behavior, appearance and sexuality that has been discovered in previous scholarship. In this thesis four different magazines have been studied, two male and two female: Café, King, Elle and Vecko Revyn. This thesis is a comparative qualitative case study with contemporary gender theory and social constructivism that will study how men and women are represented in Swedish male magazines and how women and men are represented in Swedish female magazines. The gathered data concluded in the analysis that men and women are portrayed differently in male and female magazines. There is a lack of representation of women in male magazines and men in female magazines in Sweden. In both gender magazines men are still portrayed as strong, in control and can talk about sex much more than women, while women are represented as sensitive, beautiful and emotional and can not talk about sex or show the body to a similar extent as men however, the female magazines have come to include feminist interviews, and writing a lot more about women, the female body and sex.
