Which compression method is most effective in the healing of ve-nous leg ulcers? : a register study (Engelska)
Abstract [en]

Background: Venous leg ulcers involve considerable suffering for patients. Pain, odor and leakage of exudate affects patients physically, mentally and socially. Compression therapy accelerates wound healing. There are various methods of compression therapy, but there is no conclusive answer to which method provides the shortest healing time. Aim: The aim was to find out which compression method that provides the shortest healing time in treatment of venous leg ulcers localized from the leg down to the ankle; short stretch wraps, multi-layer bandaging with high compression, multi-layer bandaging with reduced compression or com-pression hosiery? Method: This was a register study based on data from the quality register RiksSår. Results: The study included 454 patients. 106 patients had been treated with short stretch wraps, 127 with multi-layer bandaging with high compression, 99 with multi-layer bandaging with reduced compression and 122 with compression hosiery. There was a signifi-cant difference in wound healing time between the methods. Wounds treated with compres-sion hosiery had the shortest healing time. These wounds were significantly smaller than the others. Also when wound size was accounted for compression hosiery had the shortest wound healing time together with short stretch wraps. Conclusion: Patient compliance and the sim-plicity of treatment have contributed to these results. Previous studies show that patients pre-fer a compression treatment that is as comfortable as can be and restricts their everyday life as little as possible. This is mainly met by compression hosiery and short stretch wraps. These two have also been proven to be easy to apply regardless of knowledge and experience.
