Abstract [en]

Background: Diabetes mellitus type 1 is one of the most common disease among children in Sweden. So far the disease are uncureble and it is known that the disease have influence on daily life of the whole family.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe parents' experiences after their child get the diagnos diabetes mellitus type 1.

Method: A literature review was used for this study, five qualitative and five quantitative studies were analyzed. The analysis lead to three main themes; Need for new knowledge, Changes in daily life, and Changes in responsibilities within the family.

Results: The results showed that the first time after the child's diagnosis of DT1 was hard on the parents and they described it as overwhelming. They experienced good nursing care but also lack of some information. Mothers mainly felt a need to be in control after the child's diagnosis which led to an assisting role for the fathers.

Conclusion: Parents felt the time after diagnosis as overwhelming and missed some information because they were not able to recall the information that had been told to them. Overall they felt that they missed some information about specific topics and to resolve that the nurse had to have knowledge about the topic to be able to discuss this topics with the parents. Another conclusion was that the nurses had to involve both parents from the beginning to create an equal relationship.
