Adult’s experiences of living with incurable lung cancer (Engelska)
Abstract [en]

Background: Lungcancer is a common cancerform that leads to death worldwide. People with incurable lungcancer need palliative care to promote the quality of life and relive psychosocial and physical problems. The nurses have a responsibility to reduce suffering and increase the comfort of patients who need palliative care. Emotional and psychosocial anxiety is common for people with an incurable disease.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe adult’s experiences of living with incurable lungcancer.

Method: The chosen method was a qualitative literature-based study with ground in analysis of qualitative research. Eleven qualitative studies from 2014-2023 was included. The studies were peer reviewed, quality audited and analyzed.

Results: The analysis resulted in two themes and five sub-themes. The themes were 1. When life turns upside down 2. Find the meaning of life. The sub-themes were 1. Loss of functional abilities 2. Worry about death and what I leave behind 3. Acceptance of the situation 4. Support from family, friends, and healthcare professionals 5. Maintain hope.

Conclusion: The results showed that adults with incurable disease experiences sever anxiety, fear, and worry due to the limited time. The support from family, friends and healthcare staff is important to reduce the feeling of being lonely. The relationships created a meaningful time at the end of life and increased their well-being. People who accepted their situation had an easier time dealing with the major change lungcancer entails. To experience support from nurses required to apply an empathetic and listening approach.
