Abstract [en]

EFL teachers all around the world are searching for effective methods to teach the English language and help students develop their language and communicative skills. According tore searchers, one area of English language teaching that has been neglected and poorly taught historically, is the teaching of listening comprehension skills. Thanks to the last decades’ technological development, teachers of today have tremendous opportunities of finding multimedia material to use in language teaching. One such tool is TED Talks. TED Talks offer relatively short speeches, including a range of different topics, packed with interesting ideas and knowledge. Several international studies have been made about the use of TED Talks in the EFL Classroom, and the results have shown that students have clearly positive perceptions toward the  use of TED Talks in English language teaching. However, not many, if any, studies on this topic have been made in a Scandinavian context. Therefore, this study aims to explore Swedish students’ perceptions on the use of TED Talks in the EFL classroom. In the study, 48 Swedish upper secondary school students participate in questionnaire and interviews, providing both quantitative and qualitative data. The findings of the study are interesting because they provide insights from students’ perspectives to EFL teachers that are interested in using TED Talks as a tool to enhance English language skills in a creative way. The results of the study conform to previous international studies on the topic in several ways, for instance that students show clear positive perceptions toward the use of TED Talks in the EFL Classroom. Moreover, the findings support that not only listening comprehension skills but also a range of other language skills, can be enhanced using TED Talks.
