Patients experience of palliative care in a home environment : A literature-based study (Engelska)
Abstract [en]

Background: According to the World Health Organization there are over 40 million people in need of palliative care worldwide. In Sweden the number is 72 000.  The purpose of palliative care is to relieve pain, create partnerships, communication, and support relatives. It is important as a nurse to know how to encounter patients that are facing their last time in life.

Aim: The aim of the study was to describe patients experiences of palliative care in a home environment.

Method: The method used was a literature-based study in which qualitative articles were analyzed. Systematic searches were performed in the databases CINAHL and PsycInfo. Articles about patients experiences of palliative care in a home environment were included. The study was based on 10 articles.

Results: The results showed that being able to stay at home during their last time in life was important to patients. Together with nurses, they created a safe place. Due to good communication, partnership and the nurse’s valid knowledge, patients could spend their last time in life in their own home.

Conclusion: This study highlights the feelings patients felt thanks to the nurse’s knowledge about palliative care. Patients felt respected, listened to, and seen human being. Good communication led to easier conversations about the difficult things patients now would face. The nurse’s role in palliative care is important to make patients feel safer and more at ease in their last time in life.
