I prematurely quit high school and who cares about it? : An interview study that highlights how high school students experienced support from the school nurse (Engelska)
Abstract [en]

Background: Every fourth student quit their studies in high school prematurely. Any individual who doesn't complete his or her studies is a failure to both the individual and to society, and risk of alienation. Good health is of great importance to the student's school achievements. The school nurse is part of student-health and is to support the students' development towards the goals of the education by identifying each student's needs. The question is whether the school nurse has resources corresponding to the students' need for support and if the students have access to and knowledge about the school nurse's work.

Aim: The aim was to describe students need for support and perceived support from the school nurse in connection with dropout or graduation with incomplete grades at high school. Method: The study is based on seven interviews with former high school students who have either prematurely quit or graduated with incomplete grades. In order to respond to the purpose of the study, a qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach was adopted.

Results: The analysis resulted in seven categories: These were: "Wish for support", "Haven't felt need for help", "Inaccessible", "Unclear role", "Feeling no confidence in the conversation", "Noticed" and "Confident relation".

Conclusion: The study shows that there was a need of support among the students and that the school nurse didn't have the resources to meet it. Most of the students didn't have the ability to see their own weaknesses. Accordingly they failed to seek support and were not noticed. Most of the participants experienced the school nurse wasn't available and at the same time they weren't sure what support was available.
