Abstract [en]

This Bachelor's thesis tries to find out the most significant differences between Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) -hotels and conventional hotels in Cape Town, through a descriptive comparative study, done with semi-structured interviews. More in detail, the study finds out do the principles of Fair Trade Tourism in South Africa (FTTSA), implemented by the FTT hotels, provide the wanted outcomes, and how do these outcomes empower the staff working in the hotels. The same perspective is used on the conventional hotels in terms of the principles, to see the significance of difference. This research uses a qualitative method, and applies the theories of policy implementation and empowerment to analyze the results. The analysis is done as a content analysis based on the results gained from the interviews. The content analysis discloses, that even though the FTT hotels did not completely follow all the principles of FTTSA, nor produced the exact wanted outcomes, they offered the best well-being for the employees. The well-being again, on many levels, was able to cause empowerment for the staff. In addition, what is revealed from the analysis is that the information and knowledge were often unbalanced between the management and the employees. Due to this, it could be concluded that the flow of communication is asymmetric at the hotels. For FTTSA -principles and FTT labels to be more politically relevant and significant, they should be implemented on a larger scale.
