Abstract [en]
This thesis aims to conduct research within the field of populist ideology and compare left- and right-wing populism by analysing if and in that case how characteristics of populist ideology is present in political speeches. By choosing two contrasting cases, left-wing Bernie Sanders and right-wing Donald J. Trump, it provides a unique comparison since they come from different parts of the political sphere, and this in turn can give a larger chance for generalization to other cases within the field of populist ideology. An analytical framework is constructed based on characteristics of populist ideology and a qualitative analysis is the base for analysing the political speeches of the politicians. The results of the analysis shows that there are characteristics of populist ideology present in the political speeches of Bernie Sanders and Donald J. Trump. The characteristics that are found are being compared between the politicians in the analysis. The analysis shows that there are differences in how the characteristics of populist ideology are present and how the populist ideology is filled with content in their political speeches, as well as how the differences can be connected to their ideological background.
