Abstract [en]

Social media has for the last two decades grown and emerged as an influential part of our daily lives. Access to social media has brought new opportunities and behavior in regard to political participation. The aim of this thesis is to examine if the first-time voters of Somali descent perceive that social media has shaped their voting behaviour. Through a qualitative small-N study, we gain a deeper understanding of the young voter and various factors that contribute to their political behaviours, and in addition, their motivation around it. The qualitative method includes a semi-structured interview with ten participants that were between the ages of 18-25 in the 2018 general election. Through our findings we identified that not only social media, but also ethnic and social background, were factors that they identified influenced them to take on the political behaviors that they did during the 2018 general Swedish elections. This study concludes that the chosen subject is a rather complex topic. Several factors that contribute to the individual's political behaviours were noticed. However, it is apparent that social media is perceived to partly shape the political behaviour of this group of young first-time voters.
