The Utilisation of Work-Integrated Learning in Social Capital Theory: An Autoethnographic Study of the Effects of Social Capital on Knowledge Management Processes as Seen from an Outsider
Högskolan Väst, Institutionen för ekonomi och it.
2022 (engelsk)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 30 poäng / 45 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) are increasingly being used by global NGO’s to keep up with international development. With that comes more virtual interaction and accessibility to a wealth of knowledge in a short amount of time, but also the reliance of ICT has brought some valid concerns. This autoethnographic study’s main question is: how did ICT intervention and in-person social interactions influence the way I experienced knowledge management when completing EU applications for Support Group Network?

This thesis’s aim will relate the field of WIL to social capital theory through the exploration of ICT interventions in combination with social relationships in influencing an international student’s perception of knowledge management. Bourdieu (1986)’s and Putnam (1995)´s perspectives on social capital theory are utilized in combination in this thesis.

Using fieldnotes and coding into the four stages of knowledge management, the result of this study exposed my overreliance on ICT systems and certain individuals which held me back from gaining knowledge from my co-workers. Future implications include using a hybridized space of learning.
