Abstract [en]

The development of a new application for a client’s stainless steel wires as feedstock for GMAW requires prior verification. This verification includes feedability and weldability of the client’s wires. Four different (compositions and diameters) wires were supplied by the client to be assessed for this work. In this thesis, a basic feedability assessment was addressed. With the feedability regard, the wires were characterised concerning characteristics that could impact the stability of the arc welding wire feedability. This characterisation included cast and helix measurements and actual diameter measurements. These three wire features were verified against ASTM and AWS requirements, respectively for wire drawing and for welding wire of the same class. In addition, wires surface roughness and wires hardness were part of the characterisation experiments. Although with no intention of an absolute comparison, a commercial stainless steel wire for welding was used as a reference and underwent the same characterisation procedure as the client’s wires. The client’s wires accomplished the stainless steel wire cast and helix AWS requirements. All the wires actual diameter measurements were as per AWS requirements, except one client’s wire (GAMMA 1.2), fact that can be corrected in the production without great changes. Therefore, the client’s wires are preliminarily considered feedable and usable for GMAW.
