The nurse's experience of treating patients with dementia in somatic care in hospitals : A literature study (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

Background: Dementia is one of the most common chronic diseases and many elderly people suffer from it. The nurse should use a person-centered approach which requires both knowledge and time. In hospital settings, it can be a challenge for the nurse to provide good person-centered care and to treat the patients based on their needs and resources.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the nurse's experience of treating patients with dementia in somatic care in hospitals.

Method: A literature study was used, based on eight qualitative studies. Systematic searches were performed in the databases Cinahl and PsycINFO.

Results: The analysis resulted in three categories: Create a caring relation, The design of the care environment and The Nurse’s needs for being able to provide good care. The result shows that the nurses believe that time for good communication is important and should include both verbal and non-verbal communication. In order to provide person-centered care to patients with dementia an adapted physical and psychosocial environment, along with professional educationon dementia and treatment, are required. The result also consists that the nurses need support from colleagues and management.

Conclusion: Nurses at the hospital need more time to create a relationship and time to communicate. There is also a need for a better physical and psychosocial environment for the patient. To achieve safe and good care the nurses want more education about dementia and support from colleagues and management.
