Abstract [en]
This thesis analyses how the European Union (EU) frames Turkish EU membership in the context of foreign policy. The theoretical grounding of the thesis is framing theory, which informs the analytical framework and guides the empirical investigation. For the purpose of our study, the level of analysis is the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (HR/VP). We predominantly study speeches of the HR/VP in order to gain a deeper understanding of how the EU frames Turkish membership in the context of the Union's foreign policy. Overall, our study argues that despite the material conditions that often drive debates about EU membership, Turkish membership to the EU is predominantly a process that is framed around security, Democratic value, politics and culture.
