Barriers to health care preventive work : Factors that counteract pressure ulcer prevention in health care operations (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

Background: Pressure ulcers are a complication that can occur in connection with care, treatment and illness. A great mental, physical, emotional and social suffering occurs for the patient affected. The nursing of pressure ulcers causes society to suffer from large costs. According to the National Board of Health and Welfare (2017), eight percent of the injuries that occur in care are pressure ulcers and factors such as malnutrition, immobilisation and general impairment show and increased risk of getting pressure ulcers. The care must work systematically and preventively to reduce the risk of pressure ulcers.

Aim: The aim of the study is to describe factors that prevent pressure ulcer prevention in health care activities.

Method: A literature study based on qualitative studies from Cinahl and PubMed was performed.

Results: The result showed that lack of organization, lack of knowledge about pressure ulcer prevention and lack of communication are obstacles to prevention of pressure ulcers.

Conclusion: The results of the literature study show that there are obstacles to creating good pressure ulcer prevention nursing. Obstacles within the organization are about time pressure and understaffing among the healthcare staff. Ignorance regarding the identification of pressure ulcers, pressure ulcer prevention and pressure-relieving aids prevents the healthcare staff from performing pressure ulcer prevention measures which caused a patient's suffering from care. In case of incomplete documentation, the healthcare staff cannot record or retrieve relevant information about the current patient.
