First-time parent’s experiences of the first home visit by the child health care nurse (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND Most mothers in Sweden appreciate the home visit they receive from the child health care nurse, a few days after being back home from the maternity ward. Despite that, the number of home visit is decreasing, mostly due to lack of time, too long distance and also due to the parents decline a home visit. Yet the home visit is a great opportunity for the child health care nurse to establish trust and support for the first-time parents and also to create a trustful relationship. AIM The aim of this study was to illustrate first-time parent’s experiences of the first home visit by the child health care nurse. METHOD A qualitative approach were used by the authors in order to perform nine semi-structured interviews. It was conducted with an inductive approach. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. RESULTS The result is presented in two categories and twelve subcategories. The first category describes the ambivalence before the first home visit. The second category illustrate the child health care nurse’s professional behavior. The home visit can be seen as a first step in the creation of a trustful relationship between the parent and the child health care nurse. CONCLUSION By creating a trustful relationship and by answering to the firstparent’s individual need of support during the home visit, the child health care nurse can contribute to increase parents nursing of the infant. The support benefit therefore both the infant as the first-time parents.
