How the nurses experiences the meeting; when parents are hesitant or refrain from vaccinating their children (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

Background: One of the most beneficial and cost-effective lifesavers for children today, are vaccines. The vaccines whom are in use worldwide, are very safe and well tested. Countries, such as Sweden, has high covering statistics with approximately 98 % of the child population being vaccinated.  Despite this, a rise amongst parents whom are hesitant towards the benefits of the vaccines has been noticed, and some refrain in total. Few interview studies have been made in Scandinavia regarding why parents are hesitant, and none to be found in Sweden. The aim of the study was to describe how the child health nurse experiences the meeting with parents whom are hesitant or refrain from vaccinating their children. Method: A total of 12 child health nurses were interviewed in this study. All participating nurses had to have met with hesitant or refraining parents. Data were analysed using the qualitative content analysis. Result: The findings showed that there is not just one reason for parents to be hesitant or refrain vaccination of their children. Multiple factors arose from the interviews, and 11 subcategories formed 3 categories; Anxiety and fear, Parents reasons for their decision and  Nurses professional responsible for being knowledgeable.  Conclusion: The meeting between the nurse and the parents whom are hesitant or refrain from vaccinating their children, are not easy to handle. The findings in this study could help the child health care nurse in understanding the complexity of these meetings better.
